Our story begins in Chicago back in 1937! That is when the original organizational meeting for the National Federation of Republican Women took place. Just 18 women met to discuss the idea of forming a “federation” of some sort and now just look at us….we are half a million strong and are now organized in all 50 States plus Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico. LOUISIANA first qualified and became affiliated with the Federation in 1953 and in 1964 the Jefferson Parish Club was organized. Our aim and purpose as an organization is to promote political education and activity, to become effective, as women, in the cause of good government, to promote the ideals and principles of the Republican Party, to train women to become efficient Party workers, to encourage Republican women to run for office, to cooperate and work with other Party organizations and to undertake special assignments a campaign projects whenever needed.
In 1964 a few Republican ladies got together to organize the REPUBLICAN WOMEN’S CLUB OF JEFFERSON. Our first presidents were Marilyn Wiegand and Joan King. The early years were spent working toward building the Louisiana Republican Party, working to elect Republican candidates, and promoting the Republican ideals and principles. Phone Banks were almost always run by the Republican Ladies and held in some unusual places. One such placed was in the basement of a Morman Store in Denham Springs—The Millennium Survival Food Store! Our meetings were held in homes and the board members prepared meals for the membership.
